Motions of the Earth 6th GEO CH-3

In this chapter, we will learn about the earth's rotation and revolution and their causes.

There are two types of motions

Rotation = Earth rotates on its axis.

1 rotation = 24 hours = 1 day

Revolution = Earth revolves around the sun in a fixed elliptical path. (The fixed path is called ORBIT)

1 revolution = 365 ¼ days = 1 year.

LEAP Year = comes in every 4 years because [ ¼ + ¼ + ¼ + ¼ = 1 day].

So in leap year, we have an extra 1 day = Feb 29.

The circle that divides the day from night on the globe is called the circle of illumination.

HOW SEASONS WORKS?

During Equinox, one part of earth's equal halves evenly experiences sunlight.

During Summer solstices, the north pole will have only day and the south pole will have only night throughout for approximately 3 months.

During Winter solsticesthe north pole will have only night and the south pole will have only day thought out for approx. 3 months.

As the earth revolves, it comes across this equinox and solstices which lead to seasons.
